AA1 Recognise indications of substance misuse and refer individuals to specialists
About this unit
For this unit you need to recognise signs which may indicate that someone - an employee, colleague,
co-worker, customer, student or anyone else you come into contact with during your work - may be misusing
drugs (illegal, prescription or over the counter), alcohol, solvents or other substances. There are two
elements:
AA1.1 Recognise indications of substance misuse
AA1.2 Refer individuals with indications of substance misuse to specialists.
AA2 Relate to, and interact with, individuals
About this unit
For this unit you need to be able to identify the relationship needs of individuals, develop effective relationships with them
and monitor and alter the relationships to meet changing needs.
There are three elements:
AA2.1 Identify individuals' relationship needs
AA2.2 Develop effective relationships
AA2.3 Monitor and alter relationships to meet changing needs.
AA3 Support individuals to access and use services and facilities
About this unit
For this unit you will support individuals to access and use services and facilities.
There are three elements:
AA3.1 Support individuals to identify services and facilities they need
AA3.2 Enable individuals to select, access and use services and facilities
AA3.3Enable individuals to evaluate services and facilities used.
AA4 Promote people's equality, diversity and rights
About this unit
For this unit you will be expected to encourage other workers to adhere to the values you demonstrate and support individuals to recognise their own,
and the equality, diversity, rights and responsibilities of others.
There are three elements:
AA4.1 Promote the rights and interests of individuals
AA4.2 Promote the equal treatment of individuals
AA4.3 Promote individuals' confidence in you and your organisation.
AA5 Interact with individuals using telecommunications
About this unit
For this unit you need to receive, sustain and conclude telephone contacts as part of a substance misuse service.
You will establish initial contact on the telephone, develop and sustain the contact to address the caller's requirements
and bringing the telephone contact to a conclusion.
There are three elements:
AA5.1 Establish interactions with individuals using telecommunications
AA5.2 Sustain interactions with individuals using telecommunications
AA5.3 End interactions with individuals using telecommunications.
AA6 Promote choice, wellbeing and the protection of all individuals
About this unit
For this unit you are expected to protect individuals whilst respecting their diversity, difference, preferences and choice.
There are three elements:
AA6.1 Develop supportive relationships that promote choice and independence
AA6.2 Respect the diversity and difference of individuals and key people
AA6.3 Contribute to the protection of all individuals.
AC1 Develop your own knowledge and practice
About this unit
For this unit you need to reflect on, evaluate and take action to enhance your own knowledge and practice.
There are two elements:
AC1.1 Reflect on your practice
AC1.2 Take action to enhance your practice
AC2 Make use of supervision
About this unit
This unit is about your making use of a supervisor and supervisory sessions to enable you to develop your
professional competence and work with individuals reliably, consistently, effectively, ethically and safely.
Your supervisor may be internal or external to your agency, and may be an experienced practitioner working in
a similar position to yourself. Many agencies use peer supervision or group supervision to good effect.
There are four elements:
AC2.1 Seek appropriate supervision
AC2.2 Make a supervision contract
AC2.3 Bring work to supervision
AC2.4 Review supervision.
AC3 Contribute to the development of the knowledge and practice of others
About this unit
This unit is about contributing to the development of the knowledge and practice of colleagues, either in your agency or other agencies,
enabling them to solve problems and tackle issues. Here you use your knowledge and experience to guide others towards solutions. The
problems and issues may be interpersonal, organisational or practice based. It also covers enabling colleagues to learn and benefit
from your own experience.
A key focus of this unit is continual professional development which provides teams and individuals
with added interest, information and motivation to undertake their work. It also captures those situations where you may be asked to
provide colleagues with a different perspective on a particular problem, drawing on your different experience or background.
This unit does not cover providing formal professional/clinical/counselling supervision, which is dealt with in Unit AC4.
There are two elements:
AC3.1 Enable others to solve problems and tackle issues arising in practice
AC3.2 Enable others to learn and benefit from your experience.
AC4 Support and challenge workers on specific aspects of their practice
About this unit
This unit is about enabling other workers to reflect on their own values, priorities and interests when they are
undertaking different aspects of their work, supporting them in evaluating their own effectiveness and providing
professional/clinical/counselling supervision to them in terms of enabling them to reflect on their work,
constructively challenging aspects of their work and monitoring the effects which the work is having on their
colleagues.
The workers whom you are supporting may be within your own agency or in other agencies,
and may work at the same level as yourself. Some agencies use peer supervision or group supervision to good
effect.
This unit is not about line management supervision which is covered separately in Unit BF5
Lead the work of teams and individuals to achieve their objectives and Unit BF6 Manage the performance of teams
and individuals.
There are two elements:
AC4.1 Enable other workers to reflect on their own values, priorities, interests and effectiveness
AC4.2 Provide professional/clinical/counselling supervision to individual workers.
AD1 Raise awareness about substances, their use and effects
About this unit
For this unit you will need to raise awareness about substances (drugs and alcohol), the use of substances and
the effects of substances. The awareness raising may be with children and young people, or with other people
who need to know about substances e.g. because they use substances themselves, have friends or family who use
or may use substances, or work on a formal or informal basis with individuals who use substances.
There are two elements:
AD1.1 Identify individuals' knowledge and values about substances, their use and effects
AD1.2 Increase individuals' knowledge and understanding of substances, their use and effects
AD2 Facilitate learning through presentations and activities
About this unit
For this unit you need to identify individual needs and preferred learning styles (the ways of learning individuals
find most effective and stimulating), plan and deliver presentations, and facilitate follow-up exercises or
activities to reinforce learning.
There are two elements:
AD2.1 Make effective presentations
AD2.2 Produce follow-up activities after presentations
AD3 Facilitate group learning
About this unit
For this unit you need to identify where group work is appropriate to learning,
set up learning groups, identify and manage group dynamics and power balances, and facilitate group activities.
There are two elements:
AD3.1 Manage group dynamics
AD3.2 Facilitate collaborative learning
AD4 Develop and disseminate information and advice about substance use, health and social well-being
About this unit
For this unit you need to develop a range of information and advice materials to promote substance misuse services,
and raise awareness of substance use, health and social well-being.
There are four elements:
AD4.1 Plan the production of information and advice materials
AD4.2 Design and produce information and advice materials
AD4.3 Disseminate information and advice materials
AD4.4 Evaluate the production and dissemination of information and advice materials.
AE1 Test for substance use
About this unit
For this unit you need to test individuals to see if they have been using substances, such as alcohol and controlled drugs.
There are three elements:
AE1.1 Prepare to test for substance use
AE1.2 Take samples for testing
AE1.3 Communicate and record the results of testing.
